Catheterisation

  1. Assemble the equipment you will need – catheter, lubricating jelly (if your catheter is not pre – lubricated)

  2. Wash your hands thoroughly

  3. Lubricate the end of the catheter if necessary

  4. Gently insert the catheter into the Mitrofanoff and guide it into the bladder

  5. Try not to apply too much force when inserting the catheter as it may create a false channel

  6. Allow the urine to drain into the toilet

  7. Slightly move the catheter in the bladder when it has stopped draining to make sure the bladder is completely empty

  8. When the bladder is empty remove the catheter carefully with care

  9. Used catheters are not considered to be medical waste.  The catheter can be disposed of in the non-recyclable rubbish bin.

  10. Wash your hands

TIP: By covering the coloured end of the catheter with your thumb, urine will remain contained as it is removed.
